<p>For years my mornings began the way most people's do: a phone held six inches from my face, three apps deep before my feet touched the floor. The day was already underway and I had not agreed to any of it.</p><h2>Starting from a standstill</h2><p>The change was small. I moved the phone to the kitchen and put a notebook where it used to be. The first week felt like withdrawal. The second week I noticed I was thinking in full sentences again, which is not something I had missed until it came back.</p><p>A slow morning is not a productivity technique. It produces nothing. That is the entire point: it is the one part of the day with no one else's fingerprints on it.</p><h2>What it actually looks like</h2><p>Coffee, made properly, with the two minutes of waiting left unfilled. Twenty minutes of reading something with no relevance to work. A short walk, even a bad one in bad weather. Then, and only then, the screen.</p><p>The work still gets done. It gets done by someone who has already had one good hour.</p>

<p>Every writing routine I have ever abandoned was designed for a version of me who had slept well and had nowhere to be. That person shows up about once a fortnight.</p><h2>Lower the bar until it is embarrassing</h2><p>My rule is one paragraph. Not a good one. On a clear morning I write for an hour and the rule is irrelevant. On the morning after a delayed flight, the rule is the only thing standing between me and a two-week gap.</p><p>Gaps are the real enemy. Not bad sentences, gaps. A bad sentence gets edited on Tuesday. A three-week silence has to be rebuilt from nothing.</p><h2>Keep the file open</h2><p>I never close the document. It sits there behind everything else, a little accusatory, and that is enough friction removed to get started when I have four spare minutes rather than four hours.</p><p>The habit is not the writing. The habit is the returning.</p>

<p>I read more in the year I moved a chair than in the three years I spent buying books.</p><h2>The rules of the corner</h2><p>There is no desk in it. There is no cable within reach. There is a lamp bright enough to read by at ten at night and a small table for a glass of water. Everything else is deliberately missing.</p><p>Rooms teach you what to do in them. A chair that has only ever been used for reading becomes very hard to sit in for anything else, and that quiet pressure does more work than any amount of resolve.</p><h2>It does not need to be a room</h2><p>Mine was a landing for two years. The corner is not about square footage, it is about a single spot that means one thing.</p>

<p>I have never solved anything difficult while sitting still. I have only ever recognised the solution afterwards, at a desk, taking credit for it.</p><h2>Why it works</h2><p>Walking occupies just enough of you. The part of the mind that circles a problem and tightens around it is busy watching for kerbs, and in that loosened state the problem finally has room to rearrange itself.</p><p>Take no podcast. This is the hard part, and it is not negotiable. The input is the thing you are trying to escape.</p><h2>How long</h2><p>Forty minutes seems to be the floor for me. Anything shorter and I am still composing emails at the halfway point. Anything longer is a pleasure, not a requirement.</p><p>Bring something to write with. The good idea arrives about a hundred metres from home and will not wait for the door.</p>
